When you’re in pain, recovering from an injury or trying to get stronger, it can be difficult to know where to turn. Do I need a physiotherapist? A chiropractor? A biokineticist? Should I be seeing my doctor first? What about a specialist?
Healthcare can sometimes feel like a collection of different disciplines, each operating in its own lane. But from our perspective, the more useful question isn’t always “Which one is best?” It’s “What do I need to achieve the best outcome?”
Because there isn’t necessarily a winner. Different healthcare professionals bring different skills, perspectives and expertise to the table. Sometimes one practitioner may be all you need. At other times, the best path forward may involve multidisciplinary rehabilitation, with several professionals contributing at different stages of your recovery.
And that’s something we strongly believe in at Lamberti Physiotherapy.
Different expertise. One common goal.
Take someone recovering from a significant knee injury. Their journey might begin with an orthopaedic surgeon. Depending on the injury and the individual, a physiotherapist may play a role in managing pain, restoring movement and guiding rehabilitation. As pain settles and function is restored, a biokineticist may become involved in the later stages of rehabilitation, using exercise-based rehabilitation to further develop strength, conditioning and physical function as the patient works towards returning to sport or normal activity.
Another patient’s journey may look completely different. Someone experiencing persistent headaches, for example, may benefit from physiotherapy if there is a musculoskeletal component, but there may also be circumstances where input from a doctor, neurologist, dentist or another healthcare professional is needed.
The point isn’t that every patient needs a multidisciplinary team. It’s recognising when another perspective or area of expertise could contribute to a better outcome.
Knowing when someone else can help is part of good care
There can be a perception that different healthcare disciplines are in competition with one another. We don’t see it that way. A physiotherapist doesn’t need to be the answer to every problem for physiotherapy to have enormous value.
In fact, one of the important skills that comes with clinical experience is recognising when something requires further investigation, when progress isn’t happening as expected or when another healthcare professional may have a role to play.
Sometimes the right decision is to treat, sometimes it’s to refer and sometimes it’s to work together. At Lamberti, all three are part of good patient care.
Multidisciplinary rehabilitation is rarely a perfectly straight line
The human body is complex, and recovery can be too. Pain, movement, strength, mobility, confidence and general health can all influence someone’s ability to return to the life they were living before an injury or illness. That is why collaboration can be so valuable.
Doctors and specialists bring medical and diagnostic expertise. In a musculoskeletal rehabilitation setting, physiotherapists assess and treat pain and movement-related problems and help patients restore function. Biokineticists use exercise-based rehabilitation to support physical function, strength and conditioning. Chiropractors assess and manage a range of musculoskeletal conditions, often using manual approaches as part of their care. Depending on the individual, other healthcare professionals may also form part of the picture.
These roles don’t have to compete; they can complement one another. What matters is understanding what this particular person needs, at this particular point in their journey.
It’s about the patient, not the profession
Perhaps that’s the most important distinction for us. The goal isn’t to keep someone in physiotherapy for as long as possible. The goal is to help them get better.
That means assessing thoroughly, treating appropriately and being honest about what we can contribute. If we believe someone would benefit from another professional’s expertise, we need to be comfortable saying so. Equally, we value the relationships we have with healthcare professionals who refer patients to us when they believe physiotherapy can contribute to their recovery.
Good healthcare works best when the patient remains at the centre of those decisions.
The right care at the right time
There will be times when physiotherapy alone is exactly what someone needs. There will be times when another discipline is more appropriate. And there will be journeys where several healthcare professionals contribute along the way. For us, none of those scenarios diminishes the role of physiotherapy. Quite the opposite. It reflects a healthcare approach that recognises the complexity of the person rather than simply focusing on the profession treating them.
At Lamberti, we believe the best outcome is the one that gets you back to what matters — whether we achieve that alone or alongside other healthcare professionals.
Because ultimately, The Lamberti Way isn’t about being the only answer. It’s about helping find the right one.
