Your first years as a physio matter. Choose where you grow carefully.
Qualifying as a physiotherapist is an enormous achievement. After years of studying, practical training and learning about the extraordinary complexity of the human body, you finally get to put that knowledge into practice. However, qualification is really only the beginning. The first few years of your career are when so much of what you learned starts to make sense. They are the years when textbook knowledge meets real people, when straightforward cases aren’t always quite so straightforward, and when you begin developing the clinical judgement and confidence that experience brings.
Which is why choosing where you work matters.
A salary, location and job title will naturally form part of that decision. But when you’re starting out, there are other questions that may have a far greater influence on the physiotherapist you eventually become.
- Will I be surrounded by people I can learn from?
- Will I be encouraged to ask questions?
- Will someone challenge my thinking rather than simply tell me what to do?
- Will knowledge be shared freely?
- And, perhaps most importantly, do the values of the practice align with the kind of physiotherapist I want to be?
You don’t need to know everything
At Lamberti, we don’t expect a young physiotherapist to arrive knowing everything. In fact, curiosity matters far more to us. We look for people who want to understand why. People who are willing to ask questions, challenge their own thinking, learn from a difficult case and admit when they don’t know the answer.
Physiotherapy continues to evolve. New research emerges, our understanding develops and even the most experienced clinicians continue to learn.
As one of our physiotherapists, Wendy, puts it:
“I feel like an eternal student – there is always something new to learn.”
That attitude is something we value enormously, because becoming an excellent physiotherapist isn’t about reaching a point where you know everything. It’s about never losing the desire to know more.
Look for mentorship, not just a job
There is an enormous difference between working alongside experienced people and genuinely having the opportunity to learn from them.
Mentorship has always been an important part of the Lamberti culture. Our physios discuss cases, ask for another perspective, share research and draw on one another’s experience. Sometimes that knowledge comes from someone who has been practising for decades. Sometimes it comes from a newly qualified physio who has just been exposed to new research or thinking at university. We believe both have value.
Being generous with knowledge is an important part of The Lamberti Way. We want the people who work with us to become better clinicians, regardless of where they are in their physiotherapy careers.
When one person learns, the whole team benefits. Most importantly, so do our patients.
Pay attention to how a practice defines success
When you’re considering where to work, it’s worth understanding what the practice values beyond its commercial success.
- How are patients assessed?
- What does good treatment look like?
- Are clinicians encouraged to spend time understanding the person behind the condition?
- What happens when a patient needs another opinion or would be better served by another healthcare professional?
At Lamberti, the outcome for the patient comes first. That starts with an in-depth assessment and taking the time to understand not only the injury or pain, but the person experiencing it and what they need to get back to. It also means having the integrity to recognise when you don’t have the answer, when further investigation is required or when somebody else is better placed to help. Those aren’t simply clinical decisions. They reflect the values of the people and practice you choose to work with.
Find people who make you better
Your colleagues will become an important part of your professional development. They are the people you’ll turn to when a case has you stumped, when you want another opinion or when something you’ve tried hasn’t produced the result you hoped for.
So look beyond the treatment rooms when choosing a practice for your physiotherapy career. Look at how people work together. Is there collaboration or competition? Are questions welcomed? Do experienced clinicians make time for younger colleagues? Do people share what they know? Are different opinions respected?
We believe clinical excellence grows in an environment where people feel comfortable enough to ask, challenge, contribute and learn. And that works both ways. Young physiotherapists bring energy, different perspectives and current research into a practice. We don’t simply want them to learn from us; we want to learn from them too.
Choose somewhere that shares your values
Skills develop. Experience grows. Confidence comes with time. But some things are harder to teach: empathy, integrity, curiosity, generosity, a genuine interest in people and the desire to do the right thing, even when it isn’t necessarily the easiest thing.
When we look for physiotherapists to join Lamberti, the qualification matters, of course. But we’re equally interested in the person who comes with it. We want to know what excites you about physiotherapy, what you still want to learn, how you approach people, whether you enjoy being part of a team and what you believe good patient care looks like.
Because ultimately, we’re not simply recruiting someone to fill a position. We’re inviting someone to become part of a culture.
The physio you are still becoming
Your first job won’t determine your entire physiotherapy career. But the people, behaviours and standards you’re exposed to in those formative years can shape the clinician you become.
Choose an environment that stretches you. Choose people who are generous enough to share what they know. Choose somewhere you’re comfortable saying, “I’m not sure, can we look at this together?” And choose a culture that reminds you why you became a physiotherapist in the first place.
At Lamberti, we call that The Lamberti Way. It’s a commitment to keep learning, to support one another and, above all, to do the very best we can for every person who places their trust in us.
And if those things matter to you too, perhaps you’ll feel at home here.
Could Lamberti be part of your next chapter?
